HISTORY
(“When Drew Fathomed Fathom”)

Fathom Creative was launched from an idealistic dream of our founder and president, Drew Mitchell, when he left his comfortable position as Creative Director for one of DC’s top PR agencies in 1994 to build something positive and fresh. Although Fathom’s initial value proposition was primarily based on his deep expertise in branding and graphic design, it was Drew’s dedication to building a fiercely talented team comprised of super nice people that put his business over the top.

MEANING

Fathom comes from an ancient word, fæþm, which means “outstretched arms.” In present-day English, it’s both a measurement of depth as well as a euphemism for understanding. Our tagline, “think deeper” combines these in a manner that reflects both our brand philosophy and process of working inside-out to ensure a brand’s core is what drives surface visuals.

However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was. He must have tried it a hundred times, shut his eyes so that he wouldn’t have to look at the floundering legs, and only stopped when he began to feel a mild, dull pain there that he had never felt before.

“Oh, God”, he thought, “what a strenuous career it is that I’ve chosen! Travelling day in and day out.

The Agency

The previous incarnation of Fathom’s brand was two-dimensional. “Depth” simply meant going down the Y axis.

Since then, our philosophy (and logo mark) has evolved, reflecting a more comprehensive approach to your brand: how you talk, how you act, and how you look. These three dimensions inspired our team to design Fathom’s new 3D logo with subtle nods to structure and transparency.
